Dear Kay and Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Vic. You all, and he, have been close to my heart. Vic and I were also close in age. And we were neighboring cousins growing up together; as you know, he in west suburban Chicago, Oak Park and I in adjacent Forest Park, celebrating birthdays, family outings together like going to Lutheran Camp Arcadia. With his transformation from "Bobby Berndt" to "Victor Streufert" Vic became a model for me of a kind, wise brother and Christian confidant throughout our long lives. In a word, Vic was a blessing to me.
Though separated geographically in our adult years, we treasured our times together. My wife Ellen and daughters Elizabeth and Lydia (named after Vic's birth mother) and I remember fondly our visit to Lindsborg in the late 70's meeting with you lively children, "folk dancing for the Swedish King". Then in our retirements, Ellen and I enjoyed the 2007 Brauer cousin's reunion hosted so generously by Vic and you, Kay.
Thank you for the pleasure of your visiting here and of including me in the wedding family celebration in West Lafayette. As I review my computer photo library I am reminded of the many more reunions we have had. Thank God for them. Thank you Vic. May God continue to bless us all.
Love, Cousin Richard Brauer

Though I never had Vic as a classroom teacher, he served as a wise and attentive mentor to me for more than 65 years. He and Kay, my mother's cousin, welcomed me often as a child to their little first house in River Forest, later to their family home in Melrose Park, much later to their college house in Seward, and--very shortly before their move to Bethany Home--to their house on Green St. in Lindsborg. Their life together was a model for my husband and me of observing others' needs, listening, conversation, prayer, and thoughtful child-rearing--all with love and cheerful humor.

Dr. Streufert was a mentor I admired more than any other.
He often worked 18 hour days in his dedication and commitment to his students.
He followed the path of Christ in being selfless, humble, and dedicated to the less fortunate.
He was passionate about his teaching and gave everyone a pathway to succeed.
His wife and family were his pride and joy.
I miss this great Man!

My first grade teacher at Bethany Lutheran School in Houston, TX in 1948 was a friend of Vic along with Wayne Luecht. My teacher Mr. Mueller told me how he and Vic had organ lessons together at Concordia. One day they got to the organ practice room ahead of their teacher. They interchanged the organ pipes, moved them around. When they played their lesson the sound was horrible. The teacher made them play the music with the mixed up pipes. It was not harmonic. The agony of playing their music that way taught them a lesson. The grade for that day was not very favorable. The teacher supervised them putting the pipes back in the correct position. I can still hear Mr. Mueller’s laughter as he told me that story many many years later. LaNell Mahler Koenig
